Artist of the week: El Anatsui

Open(ing) Market, tin, paper, wood, paint.
Sacred Moon, 2007

I'm a relative newcomer to El Anatsui's work. I had the opportunity to attend his "Art Talks" at the AGO as part of a graduate course on culture and education. The Royal Ontario Museum is currently hosting a 40-year career retrospective of his work entitled “El Anatsui: When I Last Wrote to You about Africa.” The exhibition is beautiful and very much worth a visit. The first image more or less convinces me of humanity's pending annihilation. Here's hoping for an alien intervention. Daniel Shea's work was discovered c/o Tristan Hutchinson's equally lovely site.
