Every so often, one comes across an immensely compelling academic book that simply makes you smile. Maria DeGuzman's Spain's Long Shadow: The Black Legend, off-Whiteness and Anglo-American Empire highlights how Spain - both as a model and an antitype for empire - inflected the construction of an Anglo-American identity as "American." The research alone presented in this book is mesmerizing.
